Texas Leads US in Migration as Sunbelt Dominates
Texas has reclaimed the top spot as America's leading destination for relocation, according to the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, highlighting a continued shift toward Sunbelt states and away from northern and coastal regions.

Texas has officially reclaimed its title as the premier destination for Americans seeking a new start. According to the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, which tracks the net gain of one-way truck rentals across state lines, the Lone Star State has returned to the top spot. This marks the seventh time in the last decade that Texas has led the nation in relocation growth, rebounding from a second-place finish the previous year.
The latest data highlights a consistent preference for the Sunbelt, as southern states continue to dominate the rankings. The top five destinations for 2025 remained consistent with recent years, though their specific rankings shifted. These high-growth states include:
- Texas
- Florida
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
- Tennessee
Regional Disparities in American Migration
The 2025 report underscores a significant geographic divide in moving patterns. Warm-weather climates in the South accounted for eight of the top 10 growth states. Conversely, the states experiencing the highest levels of out-migration were largely concentrated in the North.
California continues to face the steepest decline, ranking 50th on the list for the sixth consecutive year. While the Golden State did see a slight moderation in its net loss of residents compared to 2024, it still leads the nation in departures. Other states seeing a significant exodus of residents include:
- Illinois
- New Jersey
- New York
- Massachusetts
The Role of Governance and Policy
The correlation between state-level politics and migration remains a focal point of the report. The trend of residents moving from traditionally "blue" states to "red" states has become increasingly visible since 2020. Data from the most recent roundup indicates that seven of the top 10 growth states are currently led by Republican governors. Furthermore, nine of those high-growth states voted for the Republican candidate in the last presidential election.
In contrast, the bottom of the list is dominated by states with Democratic leadership. Nine of the 10 states with the lowest growth index are led by Democratic governors, and seven of them leaned toward the Democratic ticket in the previous national election cycle.
Primary Drivers of Relocation
While weather and political landscapes influence long-term trends, individual life changes remain the most powerful motivators for moving. U-Haul leadership notes that while external factors are important, the majority of people relocate due to specific personal circumstances. Key drivers for these transitions typically include:
- New employment opportunities or career shifts.
- Pursuing higher education or graduating from college.
- Significant family changes, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
- The need to be closer to family members following a death or health crisis.
Ultimately, the 2025 data suggests that while the South offers an attractive combination of climate and policy, the decision to move is most often a response to the evolving needs of the modern American family.
